Point Dendrometer

Our point-dendrometer is an easy to install sensor that detects changes in woody stem radius. In addition to working with our Mini Field Station data logger, this sensor is compatible with loggers from Campbell, Meter and others.

When combined with high-precision loggers, such as our Mini Field Station, the sensor is capable of micrometer level measurements. It can operate in harsh environments and provide years of data with only an annual adjustment.

FAQ

Q: What is the total length that the dendrometer can measure?
A: The stoke length of the sensor is 10mm (10,000 µm). However, since the sensor is mounted on a threaded rod, it can be adjusted each year before growing season for a total of 20cm of radius change.
Q: How far can the sensor be from the logger?
A: We typically ship the sensors with a 6’ data cable. Often the logger is mounted to the same tree as the sensor. However, because you can supply your own 3.5mm TRS (3-wire) data cable, the length can be much longer.
Q: Does mounting the sensor damage the tree?
A: The sensor is mounted to the tree with a threaded rod, ~.5cm in diameter, that is screwed into the heartwood. This does not harm your typical tree. However, care should be taken when considering sensitive species, such as the American Chestnut.
Q: What unit does the sensor report in?
A: The sensor reports in a digital, linear response value between ~30 and ~26000. This range can be mapped across the 10,000 µm of movement.
